Subject: New Kind of Game on Gameknot.

Message:
In these last days I was thinking about a new kind of game here on Gameknot....I mean, team games aside.......What about "National games"?
I mean games like football or like every team sport.
Italy vs United States, for example.
Who wants to create a national team, write it on "Team play discussions" and who wants to enter in that team, answer him.
About playing, the Captain has to call 15 players and to decide who plays in the own section.
There are 10 sections on the basis of rating:
0-1000; 1000-1200; 1200-1450; 1450-1600; 1600-1750; 1750-1900; 1900-2050; 2050-2200; 2200-2350; 2350 and who exceed 2350. The captain chooses one player who has to play, in the respective section, 2 games, one as white and one as black. The captain has to choose 5 substitutes, too.
In this way National teams play 20 games and the team with the most number of points (1 for a win; 0,5 for a draw; 0,25 for a lost by # and 0 for a lost by resignation or timeout). If this idea works, nice tournaments can be created!
What about this idea?

Seems to be a nice idea. Can there be more national teams pro country or just one. And who decides wich national team is the official one?

I'm not sure if I'm in for such teamplay, but thats for a person reason (takes time)

I hope that your idea will make it to became reality,

Succes!

For my idea, Richard, since there are lots of country in the world, ONE National team is already enough. And since there's only one National team for country the captain decides his team is the official one (BE CAREFUL! A team must have at least 15 players!)
If 2 peoples wants to become the captain of the same National team, the first who wrote it on "Team play discussions" will be it.

National Teams ...

Message:
Sounds enticing enough, I would probably want to start to play again myself, for something like that. If it were the type of event where each team would field its strongest possible line-up for the "Open" or "Championship" section. Personally I am not opposed to then creating additional categories. For instance an under 2000 section; and another section or two such as "under 1600" and under "1300". Or whatever numbers look good to break it up. Then each Captain fielding the strongest players he can get within each of those larger restrictions.
* * * * * * * * *
But to me, team events that try to create a completely "Class Tournament" type of pairing structure [matching players within classes rather than strongest available], seem pointless. And I feel it encourages "sandbagging" also. So teams have to win by getting the most Underrated players ...rather than best that can be fielded.
However, I am sure many players may like it as you suggested, since many DO play on GK teams now. And those in those matches they usually try to pair people closely rated. Then again, that is precisely why I don't play on a GK team now, after trying it in the past.
Because of seeming pointless to me, and because I have watched a number of players start out low rated on a team, some as low as 1200-ish after their rating is no longer provisional, then see them go up to 2000+ one win at a time; with virtually no losses. That leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
* * *
{Not to say it is unique to GK team play as I have seen the same thing happen in APCT . I believe it was one Florida player for instance, who entered himself into the organization as being a "D" player. Then "N." climbed to well beyond 2200 over the next few years, winning virtually every prize tournament he entered that lacked Masters in it. Not to mention manufacturing a time claim against Master he trailed in a team event section or just couldn't beat legitimately. I have probably never been so disgusted from any Chess matter as to watch a Closet-Master entering sections for several years, supposed to be for Class D only, or C, or B and then taking the prize money meant for real Class players.}
* * *
To see the same happen with a player here on GK was especially irritating. So If there is a National Event held, I hope players will be chosen that will also value representing their country's integrity, at least as much as its Chess.
* * *
Okay, sorry for the rant Andy. You know, in the past some players have started team matches of GK vs other sites, and these were organized by the player themself and whatever helpers they found/wanted. Rather than being done by GK management
.... so if you wanted to try something like you are suggesting, there is nothing I know of to say that you cannot get it started yourself, just like you are, by posting in the Forums for interest, and go from there. Be the Tournament Director if you wish or you can appoint someone if you would rather. Then call for Captain volunteers, etc. If it concerns you tho, you can write GK and ask if it is alright. To me it seems there has been ample precedent however, that players may pretty much do what they wish, that is within the Rules and Laws of GK site. Of course, to be set-up for National Teams with the same structure and capabilities others teams now use would be extra great. Then you would need GK to do it, and there could be minimum membership required of Captains, as teams must do now. Pr perhaps some team fee.
* * *
Whatever you decide to do with the idea, and how, I hope to see it happen as it is very interesting in any case. Good luck if you do pursue it~! You could probably get a lot of help from other players if you need it.
Regards, Craig A.C.
* * * * * * * * * *
PS ... Something else that would interest me is if there were to be a team event held for whatever players chose to combine to make a small team of 2 or 3, to 5 players ...as many team events do. Again being unrestricted rating average, or quite a high average in the "Open" or highest section. Then perhaps a couple lower sections too.

ANDY94, R-U going to put this in TEAM PLAY Forums?

Message:
Were you going to put this in the TEAM_PLAY_DISCUSSION_Forum too, Andy?
* * *
I looked today, but did not see anything posted there from you.
* * * * *
I'm shocked there isn't more interest shown here, in this great National Team idea~!? And
certainly thought there would be more response to it by now. Have you considered it anymore
since your first post ? Wondering if any changes, or if you are working up a full description of
it, for TEAM FORUM?
Also, still don't know if your Captains must meet any special qualifications like a regular team
Captain must? Would someone have to Play in it, to be a Captain ...and would there be any
need of a Co-Captain(s) ... meaning someone to act as an Assistant to the Captain? And just
curious; Were you thinking of Captaining a team yourself, for Italy ? I might consider doing it
for USA, if qualified. Or helping out someone else to do it, if needed.
* * * * * * *
IT seems it would be Extremely Interesting & entertaining to see some of the Teams clash,
especially in a Strongest Available pairings method.
USA, Italy, Netherlands would all have quite strong potential players~! And who else, I
wonder. Quite a few players here from England and Australia. New Zealand & some of the
former Soviet nations might have quite interesting teams as well. And who else~?! Hmmmm
* * * * *
OF COURSE, the USA has the Largest Membership here on GK and is Home of the site ...
How could we Expect ANY other country to COMPETE_VS_USA
with all THAT . . . / heh-heh }8-D
Oh well.
. . .
Regards, Craig A.C.

Chess news:

How to Make Chess Sizzle -- For years, chess players have bemoaned that chess is not as popular as poker, particularly when it comes to attracting television coverage. While part of the complaint doubtless has to do with the desire of some chess players to have their egos stroked, the real issue is money. Poker players earn more because they have higher exposure and name and face recognition. In the United States, more people would recognize the poker personality Phil Hellmuth than Viswanathan Anand, even though Anand is the world chess champion and has been one of the top three players in the world for almost 20 years. Not surprisingly, Hellmuth earns more money. The question of whether chess can ...

The endgame: How does White promote a pawn? -- Is there a way to make a breakthrough from this position on the chess board? Over the last few weeks we've been looking at endgames and, in particular, pawn promotion. After a queen exchange there's little chance of a checkmating attack, so getting a pawn to the other side of the board has to be the ultimate aim in most endings. RB Somewhere in the recesses of my memory is a basic position similar to this one, though with three pawns rather than four facing each other, that allows the chess player with the move to create a passed pawn. So I'm going to try to drag up that position and try to use it as a starting point. Let's imagine there are no e-pawns. White would ...

Fooling the Gullible Chess World -- Identity theft in chess is rather common. Sometimes a full chapter is lifted from a chess book, other times a player claims credit for a single move that wasn't his. Here is one such story. It was a furious attack launched against me at the 1965 Student Olympiad in the Romanian mountain resort of Sinaia, a perfect onslaught by a local chess player that even Bobby Fischer would have approved of. For the first 11 moves of the Sicilian Najdorf, I was under fire from the 30-year-old Romanian student Traian Stanciu. By move 12, my black pieces were in crossfire. Suddenly, a funky defense crossed my mind and I realized I was not only safe, but my chances to turn the game around were excellent. For ...
